This weekend, people across the country are celebrating Mother's Day with brunches and gifts and family time. But in San José, our city council shows a blatant disregard for the mothers who work tirelessly in the fast food industry. These workers have been organizing for months to pass the Fast Food Fair Work Ordinance, a law that would ensure they know their rights and have access to paid sick leave. Yet, our city council continues to let them down.

The overwhelming majority of fast food workers are women, many of them mothers supporting their families. They show up at every action with their children because they're fighting not only for themselves but for their kids' futures. It's heartbreaking that they can't get time off to spend with their families, missing important events in their children's lives. Even taking their kids to the doctor is a struggle.

Whether you're a parent or not, you've undoubtedly relied on fast food workers to feed yourself or your family. They deserve more than just flowers this Mother's Day. Our community and elected representatives need to stand with them against corporate greed and pass the Fast Food Fair Work Ordinance.
