        6.      OLD BUSINESS

a. Endorsement Act proposed changes: Second reading and discussion regarding role and participation of club reps, etc. Vote will be at November meeting. - Clarence Madrilejos/Bill James

Bill highlighted the draft recommended changes to Endorsement in Local Races Act. Comment received that endorsement process has flaws that need to be addressed. Motion to amend Section II.D.2 to strike “or a representative of a club that been endorsed in the same race”.  Motion passes.

On Section II.D.3 Motion to remove “those who are employed by an elected official who has donated, endorsed or volunteered for a candidate in the same race many be present for the interview of candidates in that race but may not ask questions of the candidate.”  Motion fails.

 

         7.      NEW BUSINESS

 

a. Legislative update: Ash Kalra

Assemblymember Kalra shared his work in the Assembly and introduced Senator Ed Hernandez.  Senator Hernandez addressed the committee and shared updates regarding immigration. He also shared he is running for Lt. Govenor and talked about his background and reason for running.

 

                b. Finance report and discussion

                                i.  October 14th – Adam Schiff fundraiser. 

                                                Bill made pitch to members to attend.

                                ii. Ongoing:  Monthly donor program – Bill asked for committee members to sign up at the $10 per month level.

Bill shared a summary of the UDC finances – January – September. The need is great that we must continue fundraising to meet our operational expenses.

 

c. Operations report

                i. Volunteer/training report

                ii. Phone Banks – Jeff Cardenas reported there is a lot of activity taking place with phone banking.  

 

d. Guest Speaker Councilmember Raul Peralez

Cm Peralez shared update from recent VTA meeting regarding BART plans.  He also shared that he will be running for reelection for Council District 3.

               

8.    REPORTS FROM OFFICERS AND OTHERS

 

a. Executive Board/Chair: Bill James –

        Bill asked members who had not signed code of conduct for to please do so. Updated committee on activity taken by Ex. Board on addressing the Judge Persky recall campaign.

b. Vice Chair: John Comiskeyno report

c. Treasurer: Angelica Ramos  - Reminded members to pay dues, working with Secretary to document members who have not paid.

d. Secretary: Helen Chapman – working with Treasurer to list members in good standing.

e. Issues: Shay Franco-Clausen – no report

f. Community Services and Voter Registration: Judy Pipkinasked for volunteers to help staff the front desk at headquarters.

g. Finance: Prameela Bartholomeusz

Asked everyone to please come and attend fundraiser with guest Adam Schiff.

 

h. Endorsements Chair: Clarence Madrilejos  - See earlier report

i. Communications: David Cohen – no report

 

j. Gender Equity and the Status of Women: Jean Cohen – no report

 

k. Campaign Services: Jeff Cardenas – concentrating on phone banking operations at headquarters

 

l. Clubs: Alex Wara-Macapinlacsee Club reports under announcements.

 

m. Regional Director:

1) Rocky Fernandez, Region 5

2) Hene Kelley, Region 6 – Working on pre-endorsement meeting. Process is going smoothly, with need to put in alternates.

3) Omar Torres, Region 7  - October 7th at SEIU Hall, 517 Main St., Santa Cruz is next meeting; Anthony Villaraigosa is expected to be the guest speaker.

 

n. Democratic National Committee: Otto Lee 

o. DTV Report: Steve Chessin reported they taped show with County Supervisorial Candidate Jason Baker in September; they are working on Guest for the October show. We could still use more good Democrats on the crew. No prior video
experience is necessary.

         p. Pro-Choice Coalition: Claudia Shopeno report.

        9.     Announcements

                CLUB REPORTS

                Dean Club

                The DFA Link meeting on October 9, 2017, will feature Josh Harder, a candidate for US Congress in CD 10.

                Members and guests gather for potluck at 6:30 PM, and the program begins at 7:00 PM.

                October 21st is the SVAPAD gala at Michael’s at the Shoreline.  Earlybird tickets are $75 and end this Friday,

 

                21st Century Club

Peter shared this month’s luncheon will be at Michaels at the Shoreline. Delaine Easton will be the guest speaker.  Joe Simitian will be the guest speaker for the November meeting back at the convention center.

               

                Peninsula Democratic Coalition

Larry Diamond speaking at the next luncheon on November 5th, at Chef Chu’s. The agenda will focus on reforming democracy. December 16th meeting will be at the home of the Thurber’s.

 

SCDCC – Fred Rehhauuser – report shared focus of next month’s meeting will be on Climate Change.  The recall Judge Persky campaign came to the last meeting and there was a lively discussion.

 

Bayshore Progressive Dems – They are now at over 100 members. Great events taking place, everyone welcome to join.  October 29th meeting will feature Dottie Nyguard.

 

Stonewall Democratic Club – Looking to bring in new members. Next meeting will be at the Billy de Frank Center on 10/19
